The
best Steelhead and Salmon fishing in the world with famous rivers like
the Babine, Kispiox, Bulkley and Morice which are all part of the Skeena
watershed, all acceseable within the day. Even if your only into trout
fishing places like Rainbow Alley should make your casting arm twitch!
The town of Smithers is nestled right on the Bulkley River and you get
your rod into the water within 10 minutes from down town.
The fishing season stretches from mid May to the end of October and if
you’re a die hard you can hold on untill the end of December if
you can bear the cold or the river doesn’t freeze up.
Species of Fish and Peak Seasons
|
Trout Season - Mid May on but the best fishing
in the smaller lakes (GREAT FOR FLOAT TUBES) are most productive
just after the ice comes off which is generally about the last two
weeks of May.

Steelhead - If you don’t mind some
cold fingers and like wearing neoprene you can pretty much
tie into Steelhead 12 months of the year but you might have
to drive for a couple of hours. The Bulkley, Babine and Kispiox
are closed untill about mid June because of the spring run
off. The Steelhead run starts about mid August with the peak
being mid September to mid October.

Spring
Salmon (Chinook or King) - The spring salmon season run really
gets going in the month of July and can stretch into September on some
rivers. If your willing to work for your catch then the Skeena, and Kalum
rivers are productive even in May.
Sockeye
Salmon - This species of salmon run into the Skeena river system
in the month of August and the best fishing is in the Babine River just
below the fish counting fence (fly fishing only). This spot on the Babine
River is very popular and very productive but also great for the first
time fly fisher.
Coho Salmon - Coho enter the Skeena watershed in early
August and are worth fishing for untill about the middle of October when
they start to spawn.
